In brief
As we grapple with the overwhelming volume of digital content, a thoughtful approach to engaging with art can invigorate our mental health and enrich our experiences.
If you have spent time near the front at a theater like the Brooklyn Academy of Music, witnessing the passionate performance of actors such as Paul Mescal in “A Streetcar Named Desire,” it might feel like a striking reminder of the beauty of live art. Experiencing theater in person offers a raw, palpable energy that screens often fail to convey. After months entrenched in digital culture, the visceral thrill of real-time performance stands in stark contrast to the passive consumption of content through devices. In our current age, where screens dominate our interactions—be it scrolling through social media, binge-watching shows, or shopping endlessly—it is easy to forget the immense creativity and effort behind the art we consume. A simple yet profound piece of advice from a friend echoed in my mind during a recent personal downturn: “Engage with things that someone put a lot of work into.” This advice inspired a necessary re-evaluation of how I spent my time.Initially, I thought my online habits were healthy. I limited exposure to envy-inducing images and only indulged in light entertainment, like watching videos of senior dogs or flipping through motivational quotes. However, a selective approach revealed that the issue wasn’t about the type of content but rather the sheer volume and constant influx demanding my attention. Wearing down my cognitive capacity, even harmless distractions became overwhelming.Realizing that a cluttered mental space can sap happiness, I began to filter my inputs, adhering to a stricter guideline about what I allow into my world. Surprisingly, this discernment elevated my mood. Fewer distractions meant less clutter and a clearer mind. However, this approach is fraught with challenges. The interpretation of “a lot of work” can differ vastly, and often, high-effort creations come at a premium, which may unintentionally limit access for many and create an elitist atmosphere in cultural consumption. Thus, while striving for a richer engagement with art, it’s crucial to remain aware of the inclusivity of our choices to nurture a more vibrant appreciation for all forms of creativity, ensuring that the joy found in artistic experiences remains accessible for everyone.
