In brief

Ukrainian officials are seeking innovative solutions to mitigate severe power outages this winter as Russian airstrikes target the country’s energy infrastructure.

Despite efforts to restore power in Kyiv and beyond, the recent onslaught of Russian airstrikes has plunged cities into darkness, with residents resorting to flashlights for basic navigation. The situation has grown dire as Ukraine's energy grid, already battered by two years of assaults, is now on the brink of failure. Authorities estimate that power outages could extend to 18 hours daily this winter, threatening essential services and daily life.In response to the escalating crisis, Ukrainian officials are adopting unconventional strategies. This includes the acquisition of parts from an aging Lithuanian power plant to repair damaged infrastructure and leasing floating power plants from Turkey. Additionally, there is a proposal to invite a U.N. presence at critical substations to deter further attacks, according to Viktoriya Hryb, head of Parliament's energy security subcommittee.Nevertheless, Hryb acknowledged that these measures may fall short of preventing blackouts, particularly as demand surges during subzero temperatures expected at year-end. The urgency to address the energy crisis is palpable as officials scramble to implement solutions before the depths of winter arrive.
