In brief
North Korea conducted a test of a Standard Type 2 cluster bomb that can be mounted on tactical ballistic missiles, claiming the device could destroy a 12–13‑hectare area. South Korean military officials monitored the launch from Chongju and kept readiness posture after South Korea and the United States shared information.
In a Saturday launch monitored by South Korean forces, North Korea fired a Standard Type 2 cluster‑bomb warhead on a Hwasong‑11 Ra tactical ballistic missile toward the Yellow Sea, reporters from Yonhap say.
State media KCNA said the warhead could reduce a target area of 12 to 13 hectares to ash, and that the Missile Administration’s research institutes confirmed the high‑density power of the device.
During a brief statement, the general director of the Missile Administration told KCNA that the cluster bomb warheads are divided into four categories based on purpose, and that all four types will be fielded by the end of the year.
South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missile launch, originating from the northwestern county of Chongju, was tracked and that the Pentagon and Seoul maintained a readiness posture based on shared intelligence.
Shin Jong‑woo, secretary‑general of the Seoul‑based Korea Defense and Security Forum, noted that the missile observed by South Korean troops appeared to be the Hwasong‑11 Ra, citing the design similarities from earlier tests in April.
The test follows renewed calls by senior diplomats in Seoul, Washington, and Tokyo to press North Korea toward denuclearization, Yoon says the event raises tensions in the region.
