In brief
The return of Afghan women and girls from Iran after deportation sparks fears of restrictions and loss of freedoms as they face life under Taliban rule, with significant societal limitations awaited at home.
Afghanistan's border facility at Islam Qala witnessed the emotional return of countless individuals last week, particularly Afghan women and girls who have been expelled from Iran. The plight of these deportees is particularly grave, as many grapple not only with the loss of their lives in Iran — jobs, education, and autonomy — but also the harrowing prospect of facing increased oppression under the Taliban's rule back home.Among them were three sisters: Marwa, 18, Khurshid, 17, and their sibling. Amid their tedious journey back, the siblings expressed profound sorrow and resignation. "Afghanistan feels like a cage for women, and we're heading back to that cage," remarked Khurshid, who had embraced her individuality as a self-taught painter. As they prepared for their return, the need for headscarves and appropriate outfits became distressingly evident. This year, Iran has deported over 1.4 million Afghans, shattering dreams and prospects for many, especially women and girls who sought sanctuary from the oppressive Taliban regime. The situation has been exacerbated by Pakistan's similar policies, endangering the lives of those who fled in search of safety and empowerment.Upon returning, these young women are met with the realization that their newfound liberties stand in stark contrast to the anticipations awaiting them. The Taliban enforces some of the most stringent limitations globally on women and girls, including an outright ban on girls pursuing education beyond sixth grade, and prohibitions on women accessing employment or public spaces without a male guardian. Khurshid defied Taliban mandates by not wearing a hijab at the border crossing. However, her sister acknowledged their need to adopt Taliban-compliant attire upon their return. The new Afghan regime's restrictions cast a dark shadow over the sisters' future, leaving them to contend with a fate that seems confined to their previous struggles.
