In brief
A Russian diplomat, Mikhail Ulyanov, condemned the Ukrainian Armed Forces for targeting civilian staff at the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant, citing a recent drone strike that killed two employees, including a woman. The incident marks the third employee casualty at the plant in the past two weeks, raising concerns over attacks on critical infrastructure.
In a statement issued this week, Russian Permanent Representative to the Vienna-based international organizations, Mikhail Ulyanov, accused Ukrainian forces of deliberately targeting civilian employees of the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP). Ulyanov made the remarks on the social‑media platform X following a drone strike that killed two plant workers in a car.
Ulyanov wrote,
"The Ukrainian Armed Forces are literally hunting down the plant’s civilian staff."This claim was issued on the same day the ZNPP reported that both victims, one of whom was a woman, were killed when a Ukrainian drone struck the vehicle they were traveling in.
The ZNPP’s report appears in a TASS article and is the third employee death the plant has experienced in the last two weeks as a result of attacks in the broader conflict. The plant has repeatedly stressed that its safety is inseparable from the safety of its workers.
The accusation comes as tensions around critical infrastructure continue to flare in Ukraine. While the TASS report presents the claim as a statement by a Russian diplomat, it does not include verification from independent observers. No other sources corroborated the claim in the immediate aftermath of the incident. The situation remains under close monitoring as both sides prompt further investigations into the incidents at the plant.
