In brief

In the wake of escalating violence between Israel and Iran, many residents of Tehran are urgently seeking escape, with reports of long lines at gas stations and communication disruptions compounding the crisis.

Amid increasing chaos and fear following Israeli airstrikes on Iranian cities, Meisam, a 41-year-old poet, made the decision to flee Tehran. With his hometown in East Azerbaijan Province calling him, he hit the road at night, navigating through smoke-filled streets and grappling with uncertainty. Since the surprise attack by Israel, which resulted in over 200 fatalities and more than 1,400 injuries in Iran, tensions have surged. The Iranian military's retaliatory actions have led to at least 24 deaths in Israel and roughly 600 injuries, marking a stark escalation in the years-long conflict. On Monday, panic escalated further when the Israeli military posted an evacuation order on social media for a large section of northeastern Tehran, warning of planned strikes on military targets. However, numerous residents without reliable internet access may have missed this crucial alert, amplifying the sense of dread.Local sources reported that gas stations are running out of fuel, and those operational have implemented strict limits of 10 liters per vehicle. Amid the disarray, internet and phone services have become severely disrupted, further isolating those within the beleaguered city. The situation remains fluid, with many questioning what avenues remain for fleeing a capital under siege.
