In brief
On December 29, 2024, a tragic aviation disaster occurred in South Korea, claiming the lives of 179 out of the 181 passengers aboard a Boeing 737-800 as it was landing at Muan Airport. Authorities are currently probing into various potential causes, with a specific focus on a possible bird strike and landing gear failure.
Despite wildlife strikes being a frequent occurrence in aviation, fatalities and severe injuries are considered rare. A report from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) highlighted that between 1988 and 2023, wildlife strikes have caused 76 deaths involving both military and civilian aircraft within the United States. The majority of these incidents were linked to birds, although the FAA's definition encompasses other animals such as deer and coyotes. In 2023 alone, the FAA documented 19,603 wildlife strikes, averaging approximately 54 incidents daily, with a mere 3.6 percent resulting in damage. Some significant historical bird strike incidents include the Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302 disaster in March 2019, which led to the loss of all 157 passengers on board, occurring shortly after another Boeing 737 Max 8-related tragedy in Indonesia. As investigations into the Muan Airport crash continue, officials highlight the urgent need for addressing safety measures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
