In brief

Nina Kutina, 40, and her daughters aged 4 and 6, were living in a cave in Gokarna, Karnataka state, where Kutina sought spirituality and a connection with nature. Authorities found them while patrolling for tourists in a landslide-prone area. The police were initially concerned for their safety due to the cave's dangerous location.

On July 9, police inspector Sridhar S.R. stumbled upon the unusual scene while looking for lost tourists in the lush forests of the southern Indian town. Near a statue of a Hindu deity veiled by vegetation, he discovered makeshift curtains made from red saris that led to the cave's entrance. Inside, Kutina was living a simple life, focusing on yoga and meditation, alongside making meals on a wood-fired stove. The walls of the cave were adorned with photos of Hindu holy figures.Despite concerns about heavy rainfall and snakes in the region, Kutina expressed her desire to remain in the forest, emphasizing her intent to worship in nature. However, her situation has prompted protracted discussions among government and police officials regarding her legal status, as she had reportedly been residing in India for nearly a decade without proper documentation. As the investigation continues, the future of the family remains uncertain, particularly with the looming threat of deportation back to Russia. Police Superintendent M. Narayana remarked on the cultural perception of caves as places of solace for Kutina, highlighting the complexities surrounding international residency and personal freedom. Authorities are handling the matter with care, balancing the need for adherence to visa regulations with compassion for the family's unusual lifestyle choice.
