In brief
U.S. Ambassador to Israel calls for accountability over the death of Sayfollah Musallet, emphasizing the need for an aggressive investigation in light of rising tensions.
The United States ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, has demanded an "aggressive investigation" into the death of 20-year-old Palestinian-American Sayfollah Musallet, who was killed during a clash with Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank last Friday. Referring to the incident as a "murder" and a “criminal and terrorist act,” Huckabee stressed the need for accountability.Musallet, who was visiting family in the area and had U.S. citizenship, was one of two Palestinian men who lost their lives during the violence near Sinjil. According to Palestinian health officials, the other victim, 23-year-old Mohammad Shalabi, was shot during the confrontation, though it remains unclear who fired the shots, with both settlers and Israeli soldiers present at the scene. The Israeli military has not confirmed the deaths, mentioning only that a violent exchange occurred when Palestinians allegedly threw stones at Israeli civilians, resulting in injuries to two Israelis. The U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem acknowledged Musallet's death and confirmed his American citizenship. This tragic incident highlights the increasing violence against Palestinians in the West Bank, particularly amid ongoing tensions related to the conflict with Hamas in Gaza. Huckabee's statement marks a significant moment, as he has historically supported Israeli settlements, regarded by many in the international community as illegal.
