In brief

A British court has upheld a ruling to bar a Chinese businessman, linked to Prince Andrew, from entering the U.K. due to concerns over national security. The individual, identified only as H6, has connections to the Chinese Communist Party and is suspected of potential political interference.

Prince Andrew, the younger brother of King Charles III, finds himself embroiled in a national security controversy following a U.K. court's decision to deny entry to a Chinese national linked to him. This ruling, made public on Thursday, describes the individual, referred to as H6, as a "close confidant" of the Duke of York and cites national security concerns as the primary reason for the ban.The Special Immigration Appeals Commission disclosed in a comprehensive 53-page ruling that this 50-year-old man had established connections not only with Andrew but also with senior British officials, while maintaining ties to the Chinese Communist Party and organizations that promote Chinese influence abroad. The court stated, "The Applicant had been in a position to generate relationships with prominent U.K. figures and senior Chinese officials that could be leveraged for political interference purposes."The Chinese national had previously studied in the U.K. and initiated a consultancy aimed at aiding British firms in navigating investment opportunities within China. Notably, he was associated with Andrew during the latter's tenure as a special envoy for trade and investment. A letter from Dominic Hampshire, a senior adviser to Andrew, confirmed that H6 was authorized to act on the Duke's behalf in engagements with potential Chinese partners. The investigation took a significant turn when security services seized H6's mobile phone and digital devices after he was stopped at the border in November 2021, leading to the collection of crucial evidence regarding his relationship with Prince Andrew. This development adds another layer of scrutiny to the Duke’s already contentious dealings as questions surrounding his connections and conduct continue to arise.
