In brief

On January 17, 2025, a Russian court delivered sentences of up to five and a half years in prison to three lawyers who represented the late opposition figure Aleksei Navalny. This ruling comes as a stark illustration of the Kremlin's relentless efforts to dismantle Navalny's connections to the public following his demise in a penal colony last year. The lawyers—Vadim Kobzev, Igor Sergunin, and Aleksei Liptser—were convicted of playing roles in an extremist organization after being arrested while Navalny was incarcerated in a high-security facility in Siberia in October 2023.

The city court in Petushki handed down the sentences amid a broader crackdown on dissent within Russia, with Navalny having remained an influential opposition leader through the years, even while imprisoned. The Kremlin labeled his national movement as extremist shortly before the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Kobzev received the harshest sentence of five and a half years, while Liptser was sentenced to five years and Sergunin, the only one of the trio to accept a guilty plea, was given three and a half years. In a statement following the verdict, Yulia Navalnaya, Navalny's widow, denounced the decision and labeled the lawyers political prisoners deserving of immediate release. Lyubov Sobol, a prominent ally of Navalny, condemned the ruling as a politically motivated act of revenge by the Kremlin against loyal associates of the late opposition leader.
