In brief

In the West Bank city of Ramallah, families and supporters gathered en masse to celebrate the release of over 100 Palestinian prisoners from Israeli jails, a part of a recently negotiated hostage-for-prisoner swap between Israel and Hamas. The atmosphere was charged with excitement as the day marked a significant moment in a cease-fire agreement, while some families lamented the absence of loved ones lost to conflict.

Samar Faisal was among the many waiting eagerly in the late winter air, her heart set on finally reuniting with her brother, who had been imprisoned for over two decades for his involvement in a group deemed a terrorist organization by Western powers. As the crowd buzzed with notifications and phone calls, the release process unfolded with buses arriving, carrying numerous former inmates to elated family members. A total of 67 prisoners made it to Ramallah, including minors, while others were released to various locations including Gaza and Egypt. The collective mood, however, was bittersweet for some. Alaa Zubeidi stood in reverent mourning for her son, who had died in an Israeli drone strike. She anxiously awaited her husband’s homecoming, well-known in both communities for his past as a militant turned artist. Zeal turned to joy upon his release, as he was embraced by supporters and symbolically lifted by the crowd, celebrating a narrow focus on the struggle and resilience of their community. His message resonated powerfully: a call for solidarity and support for others still fighting.
