Swedish police confirm the victim of a deadly sword attack at the Brinell School was a 17‑year‑old girl.
Two boys aged 12 and 17 were also seriously injured, and a third student suffered minor injuries during the assault on the high school in Fagersta on Friday afternoon.
An 18‑year‑old man, who has not been named, was arrested and police are treating the case as both murder and attempted murder.
Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson and opposition leader Magdalena Andersson visited the school on Saturday morning, where flowers have been laid to honour the victims.
The attack came as students had just returned from summer break. It is being described as a deadly attack that unfolded in the afternoon.
Police reports say they fired shots once they were called to the scene, though they did not confirm whether the suspect was hit before he was detained.
Local media reports that the suspect wore a helmet at the scene and that he is a former student of the school.
The region declared a state of emergency on Friday, but the declaration ended by Saturday.
The Brinell School has just under 500 pupils, according to the public broadcaster SVT, and is located 170 km (105 miles) north‑west of Stockholm.
Police investigators carried out two house searches linked to the suspect.
In a post on X the Prime Minister called the attack a "serious incident" and said the police were working intensely to uncover the motive.
King Carl XVI Gustaf expressed his dismay and sadness over the news.
