Swedish school sword attack kills one

One person was killed in a sword attack at Brinell School in Fagersta, central Sweden, authorities say.

Police were dispatched shortly after 14:00 local time on Friday when an 18‑year‑old attacker, later described as a former student, was apprehended. Officers fired on the suspect before arresting him, who has not been named.

The attack wounded two teenage boys severely and another person with minor injuries. Eight nearby schools were placed on lockdown, and the Västmanland region entered a high‑alert status.

Both the Swedish Prime Minister and King Carl XVI Gustaf issued statements: the former called the incident “serious” and underscored ongoing police work, while the king expressed “dismay and sadness”.

Brinell School, with nearly 500 students, had just resumed classes after the summer break. The incident follows a spate of attacks on Swedish schools, such as the 2025 mass shooting at an adult education centre in Örebro, the 2022 Malmö attack, and the 2015 sword assault in Trollhättan.

Authorities are probing motives, but have stated there is now no threat to the public.
