A large fire destroyed a building in Thusis, a Swiss Alpine town, claiming five missing persons and injuring eight others. The blaze erupted on the second floor, with fire crews bringing the roof down using a crane. Nearly 100 firefighters responded, and victims were taken to hospitals in Chur, Thusis, Ilanz and Zurich. Police and prosecutors are still investigating the cause of the fire as the region remains a popular holiday destination.

Five Missing After Fire in Swiss Alpine Town

Five people are missing and eight others injured after a restaurant with apartments was "completely destroyed" by fire in the Swiss town of Thusis, police have said.

The blaze broke out on the second floor and the cause remains under investigation, according to the Graubünden cantonal police. The incident was reported after midnight local time (22:00 GMT on Thursday) and nearly 100 firefighters responded. The roof had to be opened using a crane as the stairwell collapsed.

The Alpine Graubünden region, also known as Grisons, is a popular holiday destination for both winter sports and summer nature activities in eastern Switzerland. Fourteen people escaped the building, police said, of whom two were seriously injured, two suffered moderate injuries and four suffered minor injuries.

Victims were taken to hospitals in Chur, Thusis, Ilanz, and Zurich. Police and the public prosecutor's office are continuing the investigation into the fire's cause.
