At least 30 people killed after landfill collapse in Conakry


Rescuers using excavators to clear debris at Conakry landfill

At least 30 people have died when a massive pile of rubbish at a major waste site in Conakry collapsed onto nearby homes after heavy rain overnight, the Guinea government announced.


The incident left 22 people injured, six of them seriously. Authorities have summoned significant resources, including military personnel, to search for survivors.


Prime Minister Mamadou Oury Bah visited the site to assess the situation, while local officials reported that 18 bodies had already been removed to a morgue.


Rescuers have been clearing the containment with excavators, and community members are still gathering at the site, with fears that the death toll could rise further if more victims are buried under debris.


The incident follows a previous 2017 landslide at the same site that killed 10 people.
