In brief

A blaze engulfed two schools in rebel-held Bukavu, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, forcing a panic that has left at least 24 children feared dead and adults injured. The fire, which raged in the densely populated Kadutu commune, caused the collapse of around 300 houses and left the scene littered with smouldering ruins. Witnesses say the fire was extinguished by afternoon, yet smoke still lingers, and authorities are assessing the full toll. Local officials, under rebel control, plan to release a provisional death count that evening, while Kinshasa’s Ministry of Education has issued a statement expressing sorrow and calling for safety measures. The tragedy underscores the ongoing instability in Bukavu, captured by M23 rebels in February last year.

At least 24 children are feared dead after a fire broke out in two schools in Bukavu, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

Adult casualties are also reported and the death toll could rise as more occupants are assessed. The blaze triggered a stampede in the crowded Kadutu commune, where schools are located on a hillside.

Hospitals in the area have received survivors, many showing severe injuries. Video footage shows children lying on hospital floors, while social‑media images depict motionless children on the ground.

Around 300 houses in the vicinity were destroyed. The cause of the fire remains unknown.

Rebel‑appointed local authorities plan to release a provisional death toll later today. Kinshasa’s Ministry of Education issued a statement on X expressing deep sorrow and calling for safety measures and support for affected families.

In a related tragedy, a wedding banquet hall in Kinshasa also suffered a fire‑related stampede last weekend, prompting the government to enforce stricter safety at public venues.
