A 63‑year‑old British man lost his life in a paragliding accident on Wednesday, 18 June, near Tremp in northern Catalonia, Spain. The incident occurred in the Palau de Noguera area around 13:30 local time (14:30 BST).
Emergency services received a report of the accident, located the pilot in a severely distressed condition, and provided first aid until medical teams arrived. Despite these efforts, the man later succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The cause of the crash remains unconfirmed. Local media speculate that the pilot may have become entangled with power lines, a suggestion that authorities have not yet verified.
Catalan authorities reported that three fire brigades and two medical teams responded, along with several Mossos d'Esquadra officers and citizen security units, to investigate the incident. The incident also prompted the involvement of the British Consular Office, which was to notify the victim’s family through official channels.
The area around Palau de Noguera and Àger is popular with paragliders and hang gliders, lying at the edge of the Pyrenees. This tragic event highlights the inherent dangers of recreational aviation in such terrains and the importance of stringent safety protocols.
