In brief

In a breathtaking display on Wednesday morning, a brilliant fireball, scientifically known as a bolide, illuminated the skies near Mexico City. Videos of the stunning event spread rapidly online as viewers marveled at the ephemeral beauty. According to The Associated Press, bolides are explosive fireballs that shimmer and frequently break apart in the atmosphere. Dr. Jérôme Gattacceca, editor of The Meteoritical Bulletin, clarified that while meteorites are remnants that reach Earth, bolides are the vibrant spectacle visible during a celestial object's atmospheric entry.

While meteors and fireballs are regularly observed, bolides are admittedly rarer phenomena. However, Dr. Guadalupe Cordero Tercero, a specialist at UNAM Institute of Geophysics, revealed that every couple of days, an object over a meter in size enters Earth’s atmosphere. Most of these pass unnoticed, landing in oceans or remote locations. Denton Ebel, curator of meteorites, shared his excitement regarding the event, noting that fireball networks are increasingly documenting these celestial occurrences. As the bolide streaked across the dark sky, it generated a sonic boom — an indication of fragmentation and a potential for meteorites to hit the ground. With 22 million residents in Mexico City, the fireball did not evoke panic. Dr. Gattacceca reassured the public that there are no recorded fatalities from meteorites historically, highlighting their harmless nature. The awe-inspiring sight was not only a spectacular natural occurrence but also sparked conversations across social media platforms, emphasizing the beauty of our universe and humanity's ongoing fascination with it.
