FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. (AP) — An Arizona Department of Public Safety helicopter responding to aid law enforcement officers in an active shooter incident crashed on Wednesday night, leading to the deaths of the pilot and a trooper who was functioning as a paramedic. This was confirmed by Sgt. Kameron Lee of the Flagstaff Police Department, who stated the helicopter was dispatched to assist the Flagstaff Police Department and other agencies.

In a somber update, Sgt. Lee emphasized, Tragically, during the incident, the helicopter crashed, killing both the pilot and the trooper/paramedic on board. However, the identities of the deceased individuals have yet to be publicly disclosed.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety is collaborating with the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board to investigate the cause of the crash. Inquiries regarding the incident were promptly directed to both regulatory bodies on Thursday morning.

The agency’s specialized Air Rescue Unit is extensively trained for various high-stakes situations, including mountain and water rescues. Meanwhile, the suspect involved in the active shooter situation reportedly suffered non-fatal wounds and is currently in custody, with authorities confirming no additional injuries were reported during the incident.
