In brief

A Houthi‑launched missile strike on a security training centre near Ataq in Shabwa province on Monday killed more than 50 recruits and wounded over 200. The government of Yemen, backed by Saudi Arabia, condemned the attack as a criminal strike and vowed a strong response. The Houthis claimed the missiles targeted Saudi enemy concentrations and a gathering of Saudi officers at al‑Alam camp. The incident follows a renewed Saudi‑led offensive that has reclaimed territory on the Red Sea coast while fighting continues across western and northern Yemen.

A Houthi missile attack on a training camp near Ataq in Shabwa province on Monday killed more than 50 recruits of Yemen internal security forces and wounded more than 200.

The government of Yemen, backed by Saudi Arabia, condemned the strike as a criminal attack and vowed a firm response. The head of the Presidential Leadership Council said the attack was a serious violation.

The Houthis claimed the strike targeted Saudi enemy concentrations and said they were striking a gathering of Saudi officers at al‑Alam camp.

The attack comes amid a renewed Saudi‑led offensive that has regained territory on the Red Sea coast while fighting continues in Taiz, Marib and northern provinces.

Officials say the training centre known as Martyr Ahmed al‑Sulaimani Training Centre was not a military target and call the strike a war crime.

Hospitals in Shabwa were overrun and serious cases were transferred to neighbouring Hadramout and Aden. More than 200 wounded were treated there.

The Houthis also reported a recent Saudi air strike on a Houthi‑controlled neighbourhood that killed at least 10 civilians, adding to the tally of casualties in the escalating conflict.

The civil war in Yemen, which erupted in 2014 when the Houthis ousted the government in Sanaa, has been intensified by a Saudi‑led coalition since 2015. Over a thousand people have been killed since the start of the current escalation.
