Oslo's mayor, Anne Lindboe, called off her wedding with fiancé Pål Sandvid, which was set for Friday. The decision came after King Harald V died earlier in the day at the national hospital where he was being treated for a rare blood condition.
Lindboe posted a tribute on Instagram noting that Norway would never feel whole without the king. The monarch, who reigned for 35 years, modernised the crown and strengthened its ties with everyday citizens.
Following the king’s death, his son King Haakon VIII ascended the throne the same day. The mayor’s wedding will now be postponed until a new date is chosen, according to her political adviser.
Public reaction has been swift, with citizens gathering outside the Royal Palace to lay flowers at a memorial. Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre described the nation as “united in grief and gratitude”, underscoring the depth of the king’s impact.
