In brief
Paris St. Germain’s home game against Lyon was postponed from Sunday to Monday by the Ligue 1 authorities to avoid clashes with Saturday protests that drew 550,000 demonstrators across the city. Police denied the match on its original slot to help secure the city in time for a major NFL game and the heightened security required for a bustling protest schedule. The delay also means the fixture will run at the same time as the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London, adding to the logistical strain on fans and broadcasters alike. With PSG now second and Lyon topping the Ligue 1 table, the postponement will have a ripple effect on the domestic season’s standings.
Paris St. Germain will play Lyon a day later than planned, as police have blocked the original Sunday slot in a city still in the grip of protests.
The Ligue 1 fixture, due to kick off at 19:45 GMT on Sunday, has been rescheduled for 20:30 on Monday. The French Professional League said the change was made after authorities denied permission to hold the match on the original date.
Over 550,000 people took part in Saturday’s demonstrations across France, agitating over rising fuel costs, education reforms and the cost of living. The protests, backed by unions and student groups, came with a few incidents of violence, looting and destruction.
Security constraints were further stretched by the NFL match between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New Orleans Saints at the Stade de France, a venue that requires a heavy police presence. Officials noted the proximity of the game to the protests in Saint‑Denis, only ten kilometres from Place de la Bastille.
The delay also affected other fixtures – for example, Toulouse’s home match against Troyes was moved from Saturday to Sunday at the request of the authorities. The reshuffling could influence teams’ standings as the league progresses.
PSG are currently second in the league with 14 matches played, while Lyon sit at the top of the table. The rescheduled match now falls on the same day as London’s Ballon d’Or ceremony, which could see star players such as Ousmane Dembélé and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia competing for the award at the same time.
