A 14‑year‑old student was detained after a gunman opened fire on a principal and a teacher at Lakanal Middle School in Aubagne, a suburb of Marseille, on Monday morning.
No students were harmed, but both teachers received treatment for non‑life‑threatening injuries. Authorities said the pupil had entered the school with a handgun before being restrained by a member of staff.
Education Minister Edouard Geffray wrote on social media that the incident is not linked to the ongoing protests over school conditions, and he and Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez will visit the site later that afternoon.
The principal, 53, was shot in the leg, while a 37‑year‑old teacher suffered a hit to the thigh. The police took the suspect into custody immediately after the shooting.
