LOS ANGELES (AP) — In a shocking turn of events, actor and director Rob Reiner, age 78, and his wife, photographer Michele Singer Reiner, have been found murdered in their Los Angeles home. Their son, Nick Reiner, age 32, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with their deaths.

Nick was expected to make his first court appearance on Wednesday, only days after the discovery of his parents’ bodies, who were reportedly victims of a brutal stabbing. Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman spoke at a news conference expressing the tragedy: Their loss is beyond tragic, and we will commit ourselves to bringing their murderer to justice.”

Prosecutors have charged Nick with special circumstances, including the use of a dangerous weapon during the commission of the crime, which could lead to a lengthier sentence if convicted. Hochman mentioned that the decision regarding the possibility of seeking the death penalty had not yet been made.

The murders shocked the community, with LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell stating, This case is heartbreaking and deeply personal, not only for the Reiner family and their loved ones but for our entire city. Friends and colleagues, including notable figures such as Billy Crystal and Martin Short, have expressed their grief and condolences in a joint statement that celebrates the couple as a special force together — dynamic, unselfish, and inspiring. They remarked, We were their friends, and we will miss them forever.”

Nick was apprehended by police near the University of Southern California, approximately 14 miles away from the crime scene. The authorities have not disclosed any potential motive for the killings, adding to the community’s shock and concern.

As experts speculate on the case's unfolding developments, the Los Angeles community remains in mourning, grappling with the violent loss of two beloved public figures. Nick Reiner is currently being held without bail while awaiting his court appearance, amid a highly-publicized defense led by renowned attorney Alan Jackson.
