US President Donald Trump has commuted the sentence of George Santos, a former Republican congressman serving seven years in prison for multiple charges including fraud and identity theft.
In a post on social media, Trump stated Santos has been horribly mistreated, and added, Therefore, I just signed a Commutation, releasing George Santos from prison, IMMEDIATELY. Good luck George, have a great life!
Santos was notably the sixth person in US history to be expelled from Congress, following a severe ethics report published in 2023.
During his time in the minimum-security prison in New Jersey, Santos had been sentenced after admitting to stealing identities from eleven individuals, including family members. His release occurred on Friday night, according to US media reports.
One of Santos’s lawyers, Joseph Murray, expressed gratitude by stating, God bless President Donald J Trump. This decision is particularly controversial given the serious nature of Santos's crimes, some of which involved deceitful practices in connection to his election.
During the sentencing in April, the presiding judge chastised Santos, saying, You got elected with your words, most of which were lies, as the former congressman reportedly cried and sought forgiveness while declaring his efforts to control his future.
While serving his sentence, Santos faced public scrutiny over a myriad of fabrications regarding his education and professional history, brought to light in a 2022 report by the New York Times. Further allegations included the misuse of funds collected from charity efforts and misrepresentations about personal tragedies. Following these revelations, he was charged with 23 federal felonies, leading to his conviction and expulsion.
In his commutation justification, Trump referenced Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, accusing him of lying about his military service. Santos echoed Trump's sentiments in a public letter pleading for a pardon, wherein he indicated he was enduring persecutory conditions in solitary confinement.
The commutation of Santos does not erase his criminal record but allows for immediate release from prison. Trump's prior actions have included pardoning other Republican lawmakers, raising questions about the implications of political connections on judicial processes.
