UEFA says it has lost confidence in FIFA's leadership

UEFA has withdrawn its support for FIFA’s controversial plan to sell stakes in World Cup tournaments to private investors, stating it no longer has confidence in Gianni Infantino's leadership.

Infantino announced on Saturday that FIFA would not pursue the proposal after the plan faced backlash from football’s governing bodies and the public. UEFA welcomed the decision, calling it a victory for the game and accusing Infantino of failing to keep his 2016 promises of transparency.

In a statement, UEFA said “the current Fifa leadership has not only lost Uefa's confidence but also that of many other members of the football family.” The organization referenced Infantino’s past assurances that FIFA money would serve only for football development.

The controversy has also seen FIFA’s chief operating officer Kevin Lamour claim the organization was deceived, and former senior adviser Carlos Cordeiro resign as a result.

The decision to retire the investment proposal may have ripple effects as other confederations weigh the impacts on the sport’s future.
