Three Russian submarines conducted a covert operation over cables and pipelines in waters north of the UK, Defence Secretary John Healey said.
A British warship and aircraft were deployed to deter the malign activity by Moscow, affirming no evidence of any damage to UK infrastructure in the Atlantic.
Addressing Russian President Vladimir Putin directly, Healey stated: We see you. We see your activity over our cables and our pipelines, and you should know that any attempt to damage them will not be tolerated and will have serious consequences.
In response, the Russian embassy in London rejected Healey's claims, as reported by state agency Tass.
The UK is reliant on its undersea cables and pipelines, which support vital data and energy needs.
Approximately 60 undersea cables run ashore at various locations across the UK, predominantly in East Anglia and South West England, handling more than 90% of the nation's daily internet traffic.
Healey revealed that Russia deployed an Akula class submarine as a decoy while two of its GUGI spy submarines engaged in surveillance of the cables. The attack submarine eventually exited UK waters after being monitored, while the two GUGI vessels continued their presence.
Tass reported the Russian embassy's assertion that Russia does not threaten the UK's underwater infrastructure, emphasizing the non-aggressive nature of their operations.
The Royal Navy's action included the deployment of frigate HMS St Albans, fuel tanker RFA Tidespring, and Merlin helicopters to monitor the movements of the Russian submarines, with support from other nations, including Norway.
Our armed forces left [Russia] in no doubt that they were being monitored... and that their attempted secret operation had been exposed, Healey commented, emphasizing their proactive monitoring throughout the operation.
Healey additionally referred to Russia's intention to exploit global distractions, claiming it poses a primary threat to UK security. He reassured the public that future activities can be tracked and any covert operations can be exposed, reinforcing the UK's commitment to national security.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer reiterated a strong stance against Putin's aggression, emphasizing the need for protective measures for the UK populace.
Critiques have emerged from parliamentary figures urging clearer defense strategies amid these tensions, as the Royal Navy's operational capabilities have come under scrutiny, particularly concerning the escorting of Russian naval activity through crucial waterways.
