US Marine Corps Air Station Futenma in Okinawa

In Okinawa, Japan, a 20‑year‑old United States Marine has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a 39‑year‑old Japanese woman whose body was found in a hotel in Naha.

The victim was identified as Anna Yagi, and the Marine, Devin Jacob Ballard, is stationed at the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station Futenma.

Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi called the crime “brutal and heinous” and urged the United States to enforce stricter discipline on its forces.

Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi and Governor Genta Koja described the incident as unacceptable and said it reflects a lack of discipline within the U.S. military.

The U.S. Marine Corps and the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo said they were fully cooperating with Japanese investigators, and the U.S. ambassador was summoned to discuss the matter.

Okinawa hosts several U.S. military bases and a large number of American troops, and the incident has heightened local concerns about safety and conduct.
