US Marine Detained in Okinawa After Murder of Hotel Guest
A 20‑year‑old U.S. Marine was arrested on suspicion of murder after a 39‑year‑old Japanese woman was found dead in a hotel in Naha City, the capital of Okinawa prefecture.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi called the crime “brutal and heinous” and urged Washington to enforce stricter discipline on its forces. Defence Minister Shinjiro Koizumi added that the incident “fills me with strong indignation” and that such events “must never occur”.
The victim, identified by NHK as Anna Yagi, was discovered early Saturday morning by police, while the suspect, Devin Jacob Ballard, a U.S. Marine stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, was taken into custody the same day.
The U.S. Marine Corps said on Twitter it was actively cooperating with Japanese authorities and offered condolences to the victim’s family. The U.S. Embassy in Tokyo confirmed full cooperation with the Japanese government and local police.
Okinawa, which hosts several U.S. military bases and a high concentration of American troops, has long complained about incidents involving U.S. personnel. Governor Genta Koja said the region’s repeated demands for better discipline were not meeting expectations.
The incident has sparked renewed debate over the conduct of U.S. forces on Okinawan soil and the broader issue of U.S.–Japan security arrangements.
