Virginia State University Shooting: Five injured, one critically wounded

Five people were injured, one critically, in a shooting at Virginia State University that involved multiple suspects, the university said.

Police responded around 01:28 local time (05:28 GMT) Saturday outside a residence hall when the shooting began.

All five individuals sustained gunshot wounds and were transported to local hospitals. Four were reported with non‑life‑threatening injuries, while the fifth patient remains in critical condition.

Investigators have not yet announced any arrests. The incident prompted a temporary campus lockdown, which was later lifted, though a substantial police presence remains.

Chesterfield County Police are leading the inquiry, with assistance from Virginia State Police and campus security officers.

Virginia State University serves a student body of roughly 5,000 and is located just over 20 miles south of Richmond, the state capital. As one of the nation’s historically black colleges and universities, the campus was set to resume classes on Monday.
