At least two people have been killed in gunfire at a street festival in Toronto.
Police first responded to reports of an active shooter on St Clair Avenue at 20:12 local time, when a salsa-themed street festival was underway.
Six victims with gunshot wounds were located; two of them were pronounced dead at the scene. Factories recovered from the site indicate that two firearms were involved in an exchange between two individuals.
Investigators have yet to arrest anyone, and the case remains underway. Police chief Francisco Barredo described the scene as "very chaotic" and noted that about 13,000 people were present when the shooting happened.
Runners to the site are being cautioned to stay away while a large police presence remains. Witnesses with information are urged to call the police.
Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was "horrified" and offered prayers for the families of those affected, those in critical condition, and the broader community.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford condemned the "senseless violence" and urged that the perpetrator be brought to justice.
The event that began as Toronto’s 22nd annual Salsa on St Clair Latin festival became a tragic reminder of the challenge of ensuring safety amid large public gatherings.
