In brief

The intensifying conflict in eastern Ukraine sees Ukrainian troops grappling with heightened risks from drone assaults, complicating evacuations and military operations in besieged towns.

As cease-fire negotiations stagnate, the fighting in eastern Ukraine escalates, with Ukrainian forces facing an aggressive Russian offensive bolstered by increased drone deployments. Civilians are trapped in their devastated towns, providing resilience against the relentless siege but facing growing peril in the process. With evacuations becoming increasingly fraught, both citizens and soldiers share a heightened sense of vulnerability. In this drone-saturated theater of war, any movement in eastern Ukraine becomes a target. The summer offensive by Russian forces is heavily reliant on a diverse array of drones to expand their influence across Ukrainian territory. Senior Lt. Yevhen Alkhimov from the 28th Separate Mechanized Brigade reported that movements to and from military positions are becoming the most dangerous aspects of their operations. Even as night falls, the threat lingers, with Russian drones equipped with thermal imaging cameras continuing their surveillance and strikes. In towns such as Kostiantynivka, Pokrovsk, and Kupiansk, Ukrainian soldiers grapple with constant drone threats disrupting their supply lines. Civilians still residing in these areas must navigate the treacherous environment while humanitarian organizations face increased challenges in evacuating those in need. With some Russian drones striking targets from over 24 miles away, maintaining operational efficiency and ensuring safety has become an insurmountable task for troops on the ground.
