In brief

In a dramatic incident at Bridge Bay Campground near Yellowstone Lake, a 2,000‑lb bull bison charged 65‑year‑old Carl Isom‑McDaniel, launching him metres into the air. The victim was hospitalized with multiple injuries but remained conscious. National Park Service officials warned visitors to keep at least 25 yards from bison and avoid approaching for photos. In a dramatic incident at Bridge Bay Campground near Yellowstone Lake, a 2,000‑lb bull bison charged a 65‑year‑old man named Carl Isom‑McDaniel. The bison struck him with its head, flinging the grandfather several metres high and causing multiple injuries.

Video captured by an on‑scene photographer shows the bison striking the man, who was then tossed into the air and landed on his side. Witnesses said the victim remained conscious, but in “a lot of pain,” and was later transported to a hospital.

The National Park Service (NPS) has not yet released details on the incident, but officials warned visitors to keep at least 25 yards from bison and never approach to photograph. The attack came during July, a peak tourism month that coincides with the bison mating season, when bulls can be particularly aggressive.

Experts from Colorado’s Laramie Foothills Bison Conservation Herd advised that the period of increased testosterone can drive unpredictable behaviour. They recommend that people stay “far from bison, especially on foot, and keep a safe distance.”
