In brief

During recent hearings at the International Court of Justice, the United Nations condemned Israel's continued blockade of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. Israel chose not to participate, describing the proceedings as prejudiced.

The Netherlands' Hague-based International Court of Justice began hearings on Israel’s restriction of aid into Gaza on April 28, 2025. The United Nations expressed serious concerns regarding Israel’s prohibition on food, medicine, and other essential supplies entering the already ravaged region. These measures have been implemented under the pretext of pressuring Hamas for the release of Israeli hostages. While Israel maintains that the blockade complies with international law and that Gaza has sufficient basic provisions, the U.N. argues the opposite. The blockade, in effect since early March, has escalated the humanitarian crisis following a prolonged period of conflict that has led to extensive devastation and displacement within Gaza."No humanitarian aid or commercial goods have been allowed into Gaza since March 2nd, which has devastating humanitarian consequences," stated Elinor Hammarskjöld, the U.N.’s top legal advisor, during the first of a five-day hearing. The U.N. General Assembly had requested the court to issue an advisory opinion regarding Israel's obligations in allowing humanitarian assistance for Palestinians.A total of around 40 nations are anticipated to present their stances throughout these sessions. However, an official opinion from the court is not expected for some time, leaving the humanitarian situation in Gaza increasingly precarious.
