In brief
The death toll from Russian airstrikes on the settlement of Komyshuvakha in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region has risen to 24, with five others injured, per the Ukrainian foreign ministry. The strike hit a school where aid was distributed and a shelter where civilians sought refuge. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said rescue operations are ongoing, while Russia has yet to respond.
On 2 November, the Ukrainian foreign ministry reported that 24 civilians had been killed and 5 injured in Russian airstrikes on the settlement of Komyshuvakha in Zaporizhzhia, according to Anadolu Agency.
The ministry said the strikes hit a school that had been used as a humanitarian aid distribution center and, after the initial hit, dropped nine additional bombs on a nearby shelter where people had taken refuge.
The ministry added:
“Russia knew that civilians had gathered there to receive humanitarian aid. Yet it attacked both the building and the shelter where people had sought safety.”
Zelenskyy said rescue operations and the search for survivors were ongoing, extending condolences to the families of those killed. He also confirmed that emergency services and military personnel were on the scene.
The ministry called for a stronger international response, including increased pressure on Moscow and continued support for Ukraine.
Russia has yet to comment on Ukraine’s claims.
