In brief

Russian air strike on a school used as a humanitarian centre in Komyshuvakha killed 24 people and injured five, according to Ukraine's emergency services. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy denounced the strike as evidence of Russia's unwillingness to de‑escalate, and the incident also caused damage in other parts of Ukraine.

On Monday, Russian forces carried out air strikes on a humanitarian center in Komyshuvakha, Zaporizhia, killing 24 people and injuring five, Ukrainian emergency services said.

The strike hit a school that had been used as a shelter and aid distribution point. Footage posted by Ukrainian emergency services showed the building reduced to piles of smouldering rubble while rescuers worked nearby.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, saying it proved Russia’s unwillingness to de‑escalate the war. He posted on Telegram that after the first air strike there was a repeat strike with nine more bombs directly on the shelter where people were gathered.

Zelenskyy added, “The Russians could not have been unaware that every week residents who have remained in Komyshuvakha were receiving assistance right there. This is yet further proof that Russia does not want any kind of de‑escalation, any real justice.”

Regional Governor Mykhailo Semikin reported that among the dead were a police officer and two State Emergency Service rescuers. He said 27 people are now considered missing.

Elsewhere in Ukraine, Ukrainian emergency services reported drone strikes that injured 12 people in the eastern Kharkiv region, damaging a refrigeration facility, greenhouses and residential buildings. Five people were also reported injured in the Black Sea port city of Odesa, where a warehouse was targeted and homes were damaged.
