In brief

This latest operation highlights ongoing regional tensions and raises concerns for humanitarian impacts in Yemen.

Israeli naval forces have conducted strikes on targets within the Houthi-controlled port city of Hudaydah, Yemen, as tensions escalate in the region. The Israeli military justified the attacks by stating they were in direct response to Houthi missiles that have been aimed at Israel, with the objective of preventing the port from being utilized for military purposes. Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of casualties resulting from the strikes.Social media reports depicted thick black smoke rising from the port area, with Houthi-run media, al-Masirah TV, confirming two distinct strike incidents. The Iranian-backed Houthi militants have consistently launched missiles at Israel in solidarity with Palestinians, especially in light of recent events in Gaza. Notably, just one day prior to the strike, a Houthi missile was intercepted over the city of Jerusalem, and last month one missile struck near Israel's main international airport.Conducted in the early hours of Tuesday, the naval strikes marked a notable shift from Israel’s typical airstrike methods, prompting the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to issue evacuation warnings to individuals in Hudaydah and surrounding Houthi-controlled ports like Ras Isa and Salif. IDF spokesperson Avichay Adraee emphasized the dangers associated with the Houthi regime's militarization of the ports, urging residents to evacuate for their safety. In response, Nasruddin Amer, a spokesperson for the Houthi media office, stated that the strikes had little impact on the group’s operational capabilities or morale, asserting that their supporters continue to demonstrate weekly in favor of Gaza. The Hudaydah port plays a crucial role as the main conduit for humanitarian aid and food for millions in Yemen. It has faced multiple Israeli attacks over the past year, including a strike last month that resulted in one fatality. Israeli officials noted that previous strikes have rendered the port inoperative for extended periods. The Houthis have maintained control over significant portions of northwestern Yemen since ousting the internationally-recognized government in 2014, leading to a brutal civil war. Following Israel's military actions in Gaza in response to the Hamas attack earlier this month, the Houthis intensified strikes against vessels traversing the Red Sea, exacerbating global shipping concerns and prompting US military involvement in the conflict.
