In brief

The tragic killing of two Israeli embassy staff members in Washington, D.C. has left Israelis in disbelief and mourning, with strong reactions from political figures regarding the broader implications of antisemitism.

On Thursday, Israelis were engulfed in shock and horror after the tragic shooting incident at the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sharply denounced the act labeling it an "appalling antisemitic murder." The incident unfolded as two embassy aides exited an event hosted by the American Jewish Committee at the Capital Jewish Museum. The victims of this crime have been identified by the Israeli Foreign Ministry as Sarah Lynn Milgrim, who had a role in organizing missions to Israel, and Yaron Lischinsky, who was part of the political department as a researcher. According to Yechiel Leiter, the Israeli ambassador to the U.S., the two were a couple planning to become engaged. In the aftermath, David Schiff, a university friend of Lischinsky, expressed his disbelief, describing Lischinsky as both talented and incredibly kind, reminiscing about his enthusiasm for working in D.C. "He wanted to work in diplomacy. He was so excited to work at the embassy in D.C., and he loved D.C.," Schiff lamented.Gideon Saar, Israel's foreign minister, linked the tragic attack to a rising tide of "toxic antisemitic incitement" perpetrated against Israel and Jewish communities around the world since the onset of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023. As reactions continue to pour in, Israeli society grapples with the implications of the rise in antisemitism amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region.
