Kyodo News reports that Spanish transport officials say two Japanese nationals may have been aboard the commuter trains that crashed near Bascara late Saturday, a collision that has claimed at least 17 lives and wounded 35 people. The incident involved a high‑speed train colliding with a regional service as it approached the small town.

Bascara’s rail link is a busy regional corridor, and the crash occurred just before midnight, according to the ministry. Spanish authorities have not yet confirmed the identities of the Japanese passengers and are still identifying all riders aboard both trains. The transport ministry said it was "still working to identify all passengers on the trains," a statement that the officials issued on Sunday.

The collision has attracted international headlines, raising questions about the safety of Spain’s domestic rail network and the presence of foreign tourists on local services. Officials stressed that investigations were ongoing and that they were reviewing the line’s safety systems, with an eye toward preventing similar accidents.

While the ministry has pledged to examine safety protocols, no final report has yet emerged on the cause of the collision. The crash remains under investigation, and the status of the two Japanese nationals is still unverified.
