A fairy chimney collapsed in Cappadocia, a tourist hub in central Turkey, on Thursday, killing two people and injuring a third, according to Nevsehir Governor Huseyin Kok who reported the incident to private broadcaster NTV.

Cappadocia is famed for its unique conical rock formations known as fairy chimneys, which attract thousands of visitors each year.

Governor Huseyin Kok told NTV that the collapse occurred during the day’s sunny weather, and that emergency crews responded swiftly to retrieve the bodies and treat the injured. The governor did not identify the victims or clarify whether they were tourists.

Xinhua reports that the incident underscores the importance of monitoring the structural integrity of the region’s rock spires, especially as thousands of tourists explore the area during peak season.
