American actor James Handy, 81, was found stabbed to death at his home in the Tarzana area of Los Angeles. Investigators say he was unconscious in his front garden with several stab wounds to the chest.
Handy had a prolific career spanning six decades, largely in supporting roles on television shows such as NYPD Blue, CSI: NY, and The West Wing. In 2022 he appeared in Top Gun: Maverick as a bartender named Jimmy.
The Los Angeles Police Department reported that Michael Gledhill, aged 44 and the son of Handy’s girlfriend, was arrested on suspicion of murder. Officers received a 911 call from the suspect, who informed them he was the one they were looking for. Gledhill was taken to Van Nuys Jail, booked on one count of murder, and placed on a $2 million bail.
Police emphasized that detectives believe this is an isolated incident and that there is no perceived threat to the public.
In the aftermath, the entertainment industry has expressed shock and condolences, citing Handy’s frequent appearances in crime‑drama series and his role in several popular films. His sudden death also adds to ongoing discussions about violence in Hollywood communities.
Law‑enforcement officials noted that the suspect resides at the scene with his mother, who was identified as the victim’s girlfriend, adding a personal dimension to the investigation. The LAPD will continue to work to provide closure to the family and community.
