As dawn breaks, hundreds of men gather in a dusty square in Chaghcharan, Ghor province, Afghanistan, hopeful for work that could determine whether their families will eat that day. The reality, however, is that the likelihood of finding employment is low. Many have resorted to selling their children's futures, driven by an overwhelming need for food.
Juma Khan, 45, who has struggled to find work, shares, “My children went to bed hungry three nights in a row.” His fear reflects a growing epidemic: three in four Afghans today cannot meet their basic needs, a staggering situation compounded by unrelenting unemployment, inadequate healthcare, and dwindling international aid.
The hunger crisis has broadened dramatically since the Taliban regained control in 2021, creating a Chaghcharan landscape where desperation runs high. Abdul Rashid Azimi, a father of twins, openly admits he is willing to sell one child to provide for his remaining family members. “If I sell one daughter, I could feed the rest for at least four years,” he claims, tears streaming down his face.
Child marriages are increasingly common in Afghanistan, primarily due to economic necessity and cultural norms favoring male heirs as future providers. Saeed Ahmad, another father, recently sold his five-year-old daughter to fund a medical operation. Although it highlights the horrifying crossroads faced by families, it also underscores the tragic realities of rising child mortality from malnutrition.
Abdul Malik, a local villager, articulates the collective despair: “We’ve had help from no one - not the government, not NGOs.” The Taliban government deflects responsibility by blaming previous administrations for the current situation, despite their own policies contributing significantly to the crisis.
As public institutions falter, many families are left to fight for survival with limited options. The grim reality is that Afghan fathers, already burdened by hopelessness, are now faced with the unimaginable choice of sacrificing their children while clinging to dreams of a brighter future.
