Indianapolis (AP) — Former NFL quarterback Mark Sanchez was stabbed multiple times in a late-night altercation with a 69-year-old truck driver in downtown Indianapolis. Court records indicate that the incident occurred in an alley on Saturday morning after Sanchez, reportedly smelling of alcohol, confronted the driver of a truck performing his work duties.

Police affidavit details reveal that Sanchez approached the driver at the hotel's loading dock and, after a verbal exchange, escalated to physical confrontation. The driver feared for his life, and in self-defense, used pepper spray on Sanchez before ultimately stabbing him. Sanchez was hospitalized with serious injuries resulting from the incident and was placed in stable condition.

Sanchez has been charged with several misdemeanors: battery resulting in injury, unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle, and public intoxication. His initial court hearing is scheduled for Tuesday in Marion County.

Ryan Mears, the Marion County Prosecutor, expressed concern over how a disagreement between an athlete and an older man could escalate so dramatically, emphasizing that such violence is unacceptable. Sanchez alleged he could not remember the details of the incident and was quote as having stated he was ''grabbing for a window.''

Fox Sports announcers acknowledged Sanchez's absence during the NFL pregame show due to his hospitalization and conveyed thoughts and prayers for everyone involved. Sanchez’s professional career in the NFL included a notable stint with the New York Jets and contributions as a sports analyst before the incident.
