In brief

Uganda’s decision to withdraw from the Invictus Games comes just two months after the country declared it would participate. General Muhoozi Kainerugaba said the move was to prevent being seen as opposing His Majesty King Charles III, following a letter that clarified Prince Harry and Meghan are no longer working royals. The announcement was made via a post on X, and the Ugandan defence spokesperson confirmed the general’s stance, adding that any change would be communicated globally. While the Invictus Games organisers have not received official withdrawal notice, sources say the King supports projects helping wounded servicemen. The ruling reflects a broader diplomatic tension between the UK monarchy and a high‑ranking Ugandan official.

In a statement posted on X, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda’s defence chief and son of the president, announced the army’s withdrawal from the upcoming Invictus Games. He emphasised that the decision was made “in order not to be construed as being opposed to His Majesty King Charles III”.

The decision follows the release of a letter from the UK royal household clarifying that Prince Harry and Meghan are no longer working royals. According to a Times report, the general expressed concerns about the “Harry‑Meghan nonsense” as a backdrop for the withdrawal.

Ugandan government spokesman Alan Kasujja confirmed the general’s statement: “General Kainerugaba decides whether or not the UPDF participates in the Invictus Games”. He added that any future change would be communicated internationally.

Royal sources indicated that King Charles III supports projects that aid wounded service personnel, but the final approval for Uganda’s participation remains pending. The Invictus Games organisers have not yet received an official withdrawal notice and are seeking clarification from Ugandan contacts.
