Body of Uganda’s youngest reigning monarch, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, was returned from the United States and received with solemnity at Entebbe airport. The ceremony was attended by President Yoweri Museveni and members of Parliament, all of whom formally paid respects before the king’s coffin was transported by military helicopter to Kyegegwa in the western part of the country.
Born in 1992, King Oyo ascended to the throne of the Tooro kingdom at the age of three and was crowned when he turned 18 in 2010. He was a celebrated figure on the African continent, noted for championing education, health and youth engagement.
Following traditional customs, the king’s body will lie in state at the Karambi Palace and will be taken to the royal tombs for burial on Saturday, a day that he had hoped to use to mark the anniversary of his coronation. An official funeral service at a local church is planned before the final procession.
Queens and elders have described the period of mourning as a “nine‑day” observance. Flags will fly at half‑mast for three days and prayers will be held at the palace each evening.
While the body’s arrival marked a serene return, tensions over the succession have surfaced. The king’s prime minister, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, asserted that the monarch had a son, but the head of the Babiito clan, Charles Kamurasi, denied any knowledge of a child. This public disagreement underscores challenges within the traditional inheritance system, which prizes lineage and seniority.
Prime Minister Nabbanja and Culture Minister Henry Tumukunde have urged the public to refrain from speculative social media posts, stating that any succession dispute would be resolved according to Tooro law and under the oversight of the government.
Throughout the proceedings, mourners offered sombre prayers. The funeral will enlist a military escort and include a procession in which the king’s casket is carried from the airport to the royal palace, providing a ceremonious closure to the tenure of Africa’s youngest monarch.
