A woman has been bitten by a wolf in a major shopping street in Hamburg, according to German authorities. The highly unusual attack took place in Grosse Bergstrasse in Hamburg Altona, near an inner-city Ikea store on Monday evening.

Local reports indicate that the woman was attempting to lead the disoriented wolf away from the bustling shopping area when it bit her face before running off. She was taken to the hospital but has since been discharged.

This incident is believed to be the first attack on a human by a wolf since they began re-establishing themselves in Germany in the late 20th century. A spokeswoman for the Federal Agency for Nature Conservation confirmed, There has not been a case like this since the reintroduction began in 1998.

Following the attack, the wolf was later spotted in the Binnenalster lake, where police managed to rescue it after an hour of struggle. It was reported that there have been several sightings of the wolf in recent days across the city.

Hamurg's Ministry for the Environment stated that the wolf is currently safe and under veterinary care. Discussions regarding the animal's future will take place in consultation with wildlife experts.

Wolves began returning to Germany after 150 years of absence post-1989, with their range expanding across several German states. Recently, Germany's Upper House approved measures allowing for culling in order to manage wolf populations and protect livestock. Federal Environment Minister Carsten Schneider emphasized the need to find solutions for peaceful coexistence rather than driving wolves away.
