WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President JD Vance on Thursday blamed a federal immigration officer’s fatal shooting of a Minneapolis woman on 'a left-wing network,' Democrats, the news media, and the victim herself as protests surrounding her death spread to cities across the country.

Vance's comments, offered during a rare briefing at the White House, come as the Trump administration swiftly assigns culpability for the death of 37-year-old Renee Good, who was shot during an immigration operation. Reports indicate that Good was attempting to drive away from officers when the incident occurred. The nature of the shooting has ignited fierce debate regarding self-defense and law enforcement practices.

The vice president expressed confidence in the actions of the ICE officer involved, citing video evidence while dismissing local leadership's concerns regarding self-defense arguments as 'garbage.' Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey has countered Vance’s narrative, asserting the need for a closer examination of the facts before passing judgment.

Expressing sadness for Good, Vance described her as 'brainwashed' and 'a victim of left-wing ideology,' further amplifying the divide over this tragic incident. He stated, 'This is a tragedy of her own making and a tragedy of the far left who has marshaled an entire movement against our law enforcement officers.'

While President Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem supported Vance’s defense of the officer, the administration faced scrutiny for seemingly dismissing the implications of deploying ICE agents in American communities. Vance attacked media portrayals that characterize Good as 'innocent' and called for a return to addressing immigration policy through voter engagement.

As protests continue and scrutiny of immigration policy intensifies, Vance announced plans to appoint a new attorney general focused on prosecuting abuse of government assistance programs, a move perceived as an effort to solidify support from his base amid nationwide tensions.
