Gary "Angry" Anderson, the iconic frontman of Australian hard‑rock group Rose Tattoo, died on 22 September 2026 aged 79. He suffered a cardiac arrest while on stage during the band’s farewell tour across Europe earlier that month.
Anderson, whose real name was Gary Anderson, first rose to prominence in 1976 with Rose Tattoo, a hard‑rock outfit that released five albums beginning with the 1978 debut Rock 'n' Roll Tattoo. In 1987 the singer launched his solo career with the single "Suddenly." The track, written by Anderson and credited to his bandmates, gained worldwide recognition after it was chosen by actress Kylie Minogue for the 1988 Neighbours episode in which her character Charlene Mitchell marries fellow cast member Jason Donovan’s character Scott Robinson. The episode attracted 20 million viewers in the United Kingdom and turned the song into a chart‑topping hit in both Australia and the UK, though it was edged out of the Australian number‑one spot by Minogue’s own debut solo single, "Locomotion".
Anderson’s influence extended beyond music. In 1993 he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in recognition of his community service and advocacy work for youth.
