Berlin is considering tearing down the last outside remains of Adolf Hitler’s new Reich Chancellery, a bunker in central Berlin that survived war damage and Soviet demolition in 1949. Housing Senator Christian Gäbler argues the structure is an impediment to new housing, while historians and the Berlin Underworlds Association insist it should be preserved as a monument of Nazi power. Dietmar Arnold proposes turning the site into a museum in partnership with the Holocaust Museum, citing the bunker’s architectural significance and a 1.7‑metre-thick wall. Berlin proposes demolishing the last outside remnant of Adolf Hitler’s New Reich Chancellery – a bunker that survived war damage and Soviet orders to tear it down in 1949 – to make way for flats and offices.

The bunker, built by Albert Speer, has long been a visible patch of wasteland in central Berlin, standing as a stark reminder of the city’s Nazi past. Despite its dilapidated appearance, it remains structurally sound: walls and ceiling 1.7 metres thick over 1,200 square metres of space.

Housing Senator Christian Gäbler says the hole in the historical record must be filled with new development. "We are not standing in the way of new housing developments just to preserve a bunker that might then even become a place of pilgrimage," he told the BZ newspaper.

Opponents fight back. Dietmar Arnold, chairman of the Berlin Underworlds Association, calls it "absolute madness" to destroy the site. He argues that the bunker was the planning centre for World War II and the epicentre of Nazi Germany’s collapse – a last tangible link to a perilous past.

Arnold wants the bunker turned into a museum and memorial together with the Holocaust Museum, adding that it would offer an exhibition on the end of the war. He believes it may even be possible to build on top of the structure without demolishing the entire complex.

Berlin’s State Monuments Council criticised last year’s demolition plans, stating that the bunker has "significant historical value" and should be part of the city’s list of protected monuments. The council urged the State Office for Historical Monuments to assess its importance before any demolition.

Proponents of demolition see it as a chance to accelerate housing and office development in a city that has struggled to recover from a ravaged war and subsequent Soviet control. Preservationists point to a larger debate about how cities reckon with their dark chapters and how collective memory is negotiated against economic needs.
